Manchester United's pursuit of Cesc Fabregas has received the backing of the man he has been identified to replace, with Paul Scholes believing the Barcelona midfielder would be an excellent acquisition for the Premier League champions.
Scholes' retirement has prompted Manchester United into the transfer market for midfield reinforcements, with Fabregas outlined as the first-choice recruit for the Red Devils.
Fabregas has been the subject of two failed bids from Manchester United, and the Red Devils have suffered a further setback after newly appointed Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino insisted the player is not for sale.
David Moyes, however, does not appear ready to end his courting of the former Arsenal captain, and Manchester United are expected to test Barcelona's resolve to keep Fabregas with another improved offer.
Scholes, meanwhile, believes Fabregas has the potential to be an important signing for Manchester United, although admits he is not entirely optimistic the 26-year-old will arrive at Old Trafford before the transfer deadline.
"Well it would be nice to sign a player of that quality," Scholes told Sky Sports News.
"He's proven in the Premier League, obviously he's with Barcelona, it's a big club, it will be difficult to get him away from there.
"But if you do, you have to fancy your chances strongly that we can go on and be successful with a player like that in your team."
